Verb

Definition:

Verb অর্থ- 1.  a word or phrase that describes an action, condition or experience

The words 'run', 'keep' and 'feel' are all verbs.

2.  a word which shows action or state of being.

3.  The part of speech  that describes an action or occurrence or indicates a state of being.

উপরের সংজ্ঞাগুলী বিশ্লেষণ করলে আমরা Verb এর তিনটি বৈশিষ্ট্য দেখতে পায়। i. Verb shows or describes an action - Verb কাজ প্রকাশ করে। ii. Verb shows or describes a state of being - Verb অবস্থা প্রকাশ করে।

iii. Verb shows experience -Verb experience বা অনুভূতি প্রকাশ করে।

তাই আমরা এক কথায় বলতে পারি যে, কাজ, অবস্থা ও অনুভূতি প্রকাশক শব্দকে Verb বলে। যেমনঃ

Rina went there.

He was busy.

I feel cold. এখানে প্রথম বাক্যটিতে went দ্বারা কাজ প্রকাশ পেয়েছে। দ্বিতীয় বাক্যে was দ্বারা কোন কাজ প্রকাশ পায়নি।wasদ্বারা আসলে একটি অবস্থার (busy) বর্ণনা প্রকাশ পেয়েছে। আবার তৃতীয় বাক্যে feel দ্বারা কাজ বা অবস্থা প্রকাশ পায় নি।

অনুভূতি প্রকাশ পেয়েছে।

Importance

verb হচ্ছে যে কোন sentence এর heart বা প্রানকেন্দ্র । কারণ- Every sentence must have a verb. অর্থাৎ প্রত্যেক sentence এ একটি verb থাকা বাধ্যতামুলক। verb ছাড়া কোন sentence হয়না।

Features:

অধিকাংশ parts of speech এর সাথে verb এর একটি বিশেষ পার্থক্য দেখা যায়। তা হলো এর form পরিবর্তন। আর এ পরিবর্তনের উদ্দেশ্য হচ্ছে tense, person, number, voice ইত্যাদির পার্থক্য প্রকাশ করা। যেমনঃ

• Tense (past, present, future) I go. I went. I shall go.
• Person (first person, second person, third person) I am. You are. He is.
• Number (singular, plural) He runs. They run.
• Voice (active, passive). We take tea. Tea is taken.

2. verb এর সাধারণ form ছাড়াও ভিন্ন ধরণের অর্থ প্রদানের জন্য verb এর সাথে modals (may, could, should, etc.) এবং auxiliaries(do, have, will, etc.) ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে। i. Hira plays base ball. সাধারণ অর্থ ii. She can play golf. সক্ষমতা iii. She is reading now. চলমান কাজ

3. আবার সময়ের সাথে সম্পর্ক হচ্ছে verb এর একটি অন্যতম বৈশিষ্ট্য। কাজটি বর্তমানে, অতিতে,নাকি ভবিষ্যতে ঘটে, তা জানা যায় verb থেকেই। যেমনঃ
