Position of prepositions

 

Position:

i.   A preposition usually comes before a noun phrase. অর্থাৎ, preposition সাধারণতঃ noun phrase এর আগে বসে। Examples: in the house, without an umbrella, for my uncle.

ii. We can use some prepositions before an adverb. অর্থাৎ, কিছু preposition adverb এর আগেও বসে। Examples: until tomorrow, from there, at last.

iii. A preposition can also be used before a gerund. অর্থাৎ, gerund এর আগেও preposition ব্যবহার করা যায় Example: I am fond of traveling.

iv. We can not use a preposition before a that clause. অর্থাৎ, that clause এর আগে preposition ব্যবহার করা যায় না। Example: We are hoping (for) that we will win.

v. But we can use a preposition before a wh- clause. কিন্তু wh- clause এর আগে preposition ব্যবহার করা যায়। Example:  I don’t know for what he came.

Detached position:

In some clauses a preposition goes at the end. অর্থাৎ,কিছু clause এর শেষে preposition ব্যবহার করতে হয়। preposition এর এই ধরণের ব্যবহারকে detached position বলে।                

Examples: i. Wh-question: Who were you talking to?

ii. Infinitive clause: I need a pen to write with.

iii. Passive: War reporters sometimes get shot at.

iv. Relative clause: This is the boy I told you about.
