Writing paragraph

 Definition: Paragraph is the combination of few sentences. Each sentence of a paragraph presents an idea and the ideas presented in a paragraph form a complete whole.

Features: The features of a paragraph are:

1. Collection of some sentences

2. One single theme

3. One single paragraph

Components: A well written paragraph contains four elements.

1.Introducer/Topic sentence: It is the beginning of a paragraph that gives focusing idea on the content of the paragraph. It is a sentence which demands explanation.

2. Developer/development: It contains a number of sentences. These sentences explain the idea focused in the topic sentence.

3. Termination/closing: Usually closing contains a sentence which repeats the topic sentence in other words for a logical ending.

4. Sentence connectors: Sentence connectors are words or phrases connecting different ideas in a paragraph. They function as the bridge over the gap between two ideas.

A well written paragraph contains four elements. (ii) (iv) At first, introducer or topic sentence is the beginning of a paragraph that gives focusing idea on the content of the paragraph. It is a sentence which demands explanation. (iv) Secondly, developer or development contains a number of sentences. These sentences explain the idea focused in the topic sentence. (iv) Thirdly, Termination or closing contains a sentence which repeats the topic sentence in other words for a logical ending. (iv) At last, sentence connectors are words or phrases connecting different ideas in a paragraph. They function as the bridge over the gap between two ideas.  (iii) (iv) In fine, we can say that the above elements are common in all well written paragraphs.

Length: The length of a paragraph is not fixed. You should write as long as your theme demands.

 Techniques: You can develop a paragraph by different techniques. The most common techniques are:

1. List: For presenting a number of sides- causes of road accident, dangers of smoking etc.

2. Description: For describing physical appearance- My favourite place, My college campus

3.Narration: For presenting an event- Prize giving ceremony, A road accident, Pahela Baishakh etc. 4.Cause effect: For telling the causes and effects of anything- Early marriage, Eve teasing

4.Comparison: To show similarities between two things- The cultures of Bangladesh and India

5. Contrast: To show dissimilarities between two things- Poetry and prose, History and Story

6. Comparison and contrast: To show both similarities  and dissimilarities between two things- City life and rural life, Laptop and desktop, Islam and Christianity etc.

When you decide to write a free paragraph on any topic, you should:

  •  find out some points of information on your topic through brainstorming or reading.  
  • choose a technique of development.
  • write an appropriate introducer.
  • write at least one sentence on every point of information.
  • use sentence connectors where necessary.
  • write a logical closing.
