Compound as modifier

 According to Cambridge Advanced Learners’ Dictionary Compound is ‘in grammar, a word which combines two or sometimes more different words.’

অর্থাৎ, Compound হচ্ছে এমন word যা দুই বা তার বেশি ভিন্ন শব্দ দ্বারা গঠিত হয়।

Example: Dishwasher, rickshaw puller, arsenic free

ব্যবহারঃ i.Noun noun রুপে compound ব্যবহৃত হলে তাকে বলে nominal compound     construction:                                                    i. Noun + noun – college campus

 ii. Adjective + noun – whiteboard

iii. Noun + verb – handshake

iv. verb+ing + noun – walking stick

v. preposition +verb1- income

Adjective                                                            i. Adjective + adjective – young energetic ii. Noun + adjective – snow white, cholesterol free                                               iii. Adjective + verb + adjective – happy go lucky

iv. auxiliary + verb – would be  

Often, the meaning of the compound cannot be discovered by knowing the meaning of the different words that form it.

    Compounds can be written either as one word or as separate words

    ‘Bodyguard’ and ‘floppy disk’ are two examples of compounds.
