Subject-verb agreement

 Subject-verb agreement এর অর্থ হচ্ছে Subject-verb এর মধ্যে সামঞ্জস্য। অর্থাৎ Subject অনুসারে verb এর ব্যবহার।

এর মূল কথা হচ্ছে singular subject এর সাথে singular verb এবং plural subject এর সাথে plural verb ব্যবহার করতে হয়।

কথাটি সহজ মনে হলেও অনেকেই Subject-verb এর singular ও plural form বোঝেনা। ফলে তাদের sentence এর Subject-verb agreement ভুল হয়। তাই আমরা singular ও plural এর বিষয়টি বিস্তারিত আলোচনা করব।

Verb singular/plural? Verb singularও হয় আবার pluralও হয়। singular বা plural হওয়ার বেশ কিছু নিয়ম আছে ।

General rules: সাধারণত: verb এর সাথে s/es যোগ করলে verbটি singular হয় এবং s/es ছাড়া verbটি plural। যেমনঃ

Singular Learns, Reads, goes

Plural learn,read, go

Special rules: Be ও Have verb এর singular এবং plural form গঠন করতে হয় বিশেষ নিয়মে। যেমনঃ                                                              

 Singular           Be – am, is, was                                               Have- has

Plural                Be-are, were                                                       Have-have

Subject singular/plural?

Subject singularও হয় আবার pluralও হয়। তবে subject singular বা plural হওয়ার নিয়ম আছে ।

General rules: সাধারণত: subject noun এর সাথে s/es যোগ করলে subjectটি plural হয় এবং s/es ছাড়া subject টি singular । যেমনঃ

Singular: The boy is reading. The story is interesting.

Plural: The boys are reading. The stories are interesting.

Special rules: Single word nouns: কিছু Single word nouns আছে, যাদের সাথে s/es যোগ করে plural করা যায়না। তাদের plural গঠন করতে হয় বিশেষ নিয়মে। যেমন :

Singular Plural Man men Deer deer Medium media Criterion criteria Agendum agenda

এই ধরণের nounএর plural forms vocabulary আকারে শিখে রাখতে হয়।

Pronouns Pronouns এর plural forms কোন নিয়ম অনুসারে হয়না। এর plural forms বিশেষ রীতি অনুসরণ করে। যেমন :

Singular: I, he, she, it, this, that, none, anyone, everyone, someone

Plural: we, you, they, those , some, few, all

এছাড়াও phrase জাতীয় কিছু noun আছে যাদের singular ও plural বিশেষ নিয়মে বুঝে নিতে হয়। নিয়মগুলী নিচে দেখানো হলো ।

(i) Noun + noun : এমন ক্ষেত্রে দ্বিতীয় Nounটি subject এবং সেটি singular/plural যা হবে, subject তাই বলে গণ্য হবে। যেমনঃ i. A university student is always busy. (Singular) ii. Some university students are not so busy. (Plural)

(ii) Noun + and + noun: যোগফল একটিমাত্র ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু হলে singular এবং একাধিক ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু হলে plural । যেমনঃ

Bread and butter is my favourite breakfast. (Singular)  The head master and secretary is an honest man. (Singular) The head master and the secretary are coming here. (Plural)

(iii) Singular noun + or/nor + Singular noun = Singular Lima or Shima is coming. (Singular)

(iv) Singular noun + or/nor + plural noun = plural Lima or her sisters have done this. (Plural)

(v) Plural noun + or /nor + plural noun = Plural The boys or the girls are told to do this.

(vi) Noun + as well as/along with + Noun এ ক্ষেত্রে as well as/along with এর আগে singular noun/pronoun ব্যবহৃত হয় এবং সেটি singular বলে গণ্য হয়। যেমনঃ He as well as his friends has come. (Singular)

(vii) Noun + preposition + Noun এ ক্ষেত্রে preposition এর আগের nounটি subject এবং সেটি singular/plural যা হবে, subject তাই বলে বলে গণ্য হয়।যেমনঃ The colour of his eyes is blue. (Singular)

(viii) There/here + verb + subject: Singular/plural There was a boy in the field. (Singular) There were two boys in the field. (Plural)

(ix) Proper noun with‘s’ = Singular Great Expectations is an English novel. (Singular)

( x ) Group noun : একসাথে singular, ভিন্নভাবে plural । যেমনঃ The committee has decided to do it. (Singular) The committee are divided into two groups. (plural)

(xi) Gerund, infinitive, that clause = Singular To walk is good for health. (Singular)

(xii) The +adjective = Plural The rich have to help the poor. (Plural)

(xiii) Relative pronouns: Relative pronoun এর ক্ষেত্রে singular antecedent এর Relative pronoun ও singular এবং Plural antecedent এর Relative pronoun ও Plural । যেমনঃ

i. The student who does not study regularly can not make a good result. (Singular) ii. The students who do not study regularly can not make a good result. (Plural)

(xiv) Measuring units =Singular Ten miles is a long distance. (Singular)

(xv) A number of = plural, The number of = Singular A number of students have completed homework. (Plural) The number of students has decreased. (Singular)

( xvi) Fractions: ফলাফল একটিমাত্র বা তার চেয়ে কম ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু হলে singular এবং একাধিক ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু হলে plural । যেমন : Two thirds of the mango has got rotten. (Singular) One third of the students are absent. (Plural)

(xvii) Uncountable and abstract noun = Singular Honesty is the best policy. (Singular)

xviii. Noun clause- Singular What happened is not clear.
