Punctuation Marks

 Are you acquainted with these marks?

   .  The period/full stop

   ?  Note of interrogation 

   !   Note of  exclamation

   ,  The comma

  “  ”  Quotation marks

    ′  Apostrophe 

   :  Colon

   ;  Semi colon

They are the most frequently used punctuation marks.

We are going to have a look on their usage in English sentences.

Full stop (.)

Full stop ব্যবহার করতে হয়:

  1. Assertive sentence এর পর।

Example: Rahul is reading now.

2. Imperative optative sentence এর পর।

Example: Don’t disturb him.

3. Optative sentence এর পর।

Example: May Allah help him make a brilliant result.

4. Abbreviation এর পর।

Mr. Selim  is benevolent.

Note of interrogation (?) 

Note of interrogation is used after:

  1. any type of question.

Examples: What made Mandela a world leader?

Hi friend, Are you busy now?

What are you doing?

You are walking? (over telephone)

3. something uncertain. 

Example: Robertson (?) was an English writer.

Note of  exclamation (!)

Note of  exclamation can be used after:

  1. Exclamation in all forms.

Example: What a pity! How nice the flower is! 

Excellent!

Snake!

2. Interjections.

Example: Bravo! Fie! Alas! Hurrah!

The comma (,)

The  comma is a separator. We can use it to separate :

  1. The Subordinate clause from the main clause.

Example: When you are sick, you must see a doctor.

2. Prepositional phrase  at the beginning. 

Example: In 1971, we gained independence.

3. Items in a list.

Example: Salt, sugar, oil, rice and flour are daily necessaries.

4. reporting verb at the beginning from the reported speech after it.

Example: Feroz  said to Selim, “How are you?”

5. The reported speech ending with full stop at the beginning from reporting verb after it.

Example: “I am very busy today,”  said Ripon.

Quotation marks (“ ”)

We use quotation marks:

  1. to identify quotation in all forms.

Examples: “What is your name?” said the teacher.

Shakespeare wrote Hamlet. In this play, Hamlet utters a world famous soliloquy “To be or not to be that is the question.”

2. To mention the title of  any writing.

Example: Dickens wrote “The great Expectations

Apostrophe

Apostrophe is used:

  1. To make a noun possessive.

Example: Mizan’s father is coming today.

2. To make contraction.

Example: I’ll be here until you’re back.

The colon (:)

used in writing, especially to introduce a list of things or a sentence or phrase taken from somewhere else .

We need three things:  pen, paper and pencil.

To develop skills in English,  We can:

i. read news paper. ii. listen to radio programmes. iii. watch English Films.

The semicolon (;)

  1. used in formal writing between two parts of a sentence, usually when each of the two parts could form grammatical sentences on their own.

Example: I am ok; I can walk on my own.

2. A semicolon can also separate the things in a list.

Example: You should take admit card; pen; pencil and scale in an examination hall.
