Greetings
Greetings:When we meet each other, we exchange greetings. Greetings can be-
A. Daily greetings
B. Occasional greetings
A. Daily greetings: we use these expressions to greet each other at different times of the day.
Note: All the persons involved use the same expression.
1.Greetings from night to noon: Ria: Good morning, Mita. Mita: Good morning, Ria.
2. Greetings from noon to the start of evening: Mita: Good afternoon. Ria: Good afternoon.
NOTE: You can also use ‘Good noon’ for
greeting around noon.
3. Greetings from evening to midnight: Mita: Good evening, Ria. Ria: Good evening, Mita.
4. Greetings for the first time: Mita: How do you do? Ria: How do you do?
Or
Mita: Hello, nice to meet you. Ria: Hello, nice to meet you, too.
Or
Mita: Hi! Ria: Hi!
NOTE: ‘How do you do’ is now rarely used. ‘Hi’ is used in an extremely friendly situation.
B. Occasional greetings: used to greet each other in social or religious occasions.
1. Birthday greetings: Mita: Happy birthday (to you). Ria: Thank you.
Or
Mita: Many happy returns. Ria: Thank you.
2. Eid greetings: Mita: Eid Mubarak. Ria: Thanks. The same to you.
Or
Mita: Eid Mubarak. Ria: Eid Mubarak to you, too.
3. Christmas greetings: Mita: Merry Christmas. Ria: The same to you, too.
4. New year greetings: Mita: Happy new year. Ria: Happy new year to you too.
