Relative pronoun

 Relative pronoun is pronoun that introduces an adjective clause.

অর্থাৎ যে pronoun দ্বারা adjective clause শুরু করা হয়ে থাকে, তাকে বলে Relative pronoun ।

ইংরেজিতে Relative pronounগুলী হচ্ছে-

which, that, who, whom, and whose.

1. Who and whom refer only to people.

2. Which refers to things, qualities, and ideas–never to people.

3. That and whose refer to people, things, qualities, and ideas.

Relative pronoun দ্বারা দুটি clause কে যুক্ত করা যায় এবং এরা সর্বদা একইসাথে দুটি Word এর মতো কাজ করে। যথাঃ

a. Subordinating conjunction  

b. Subj/object of the next clause.

Examples: 

1. I saw a girl. She was beautiful.

2. He got a letter. He had been expecting it.

3.This is the bag. You had left it behind.

Each of these pairs can be combined into a single sentence.

I saw a girl who was beautiful. (subj)

He got a letter which he had been expecting. (obj)

This is the bag that you had left behind. (obj)

NB: Clauses can also be made with zero relative pronouns.

Example: The pen (that) I lost was red.
