Conjunction

 Conjunction is a word such as ‘and’, ‘but’, ‘while’ or ‘although’ that connects words, phrases and clauses in a sentence

অর্থাৎ, Conjunction হচ্ছে ‘and’, ‘but’, ‘while’ or ‘although’ ইত্যাদি জাতিয় শব্দ যা একটি sentence এর words, phrases বা clauses যুক্ত করে। যেমনঃ

I bought sugar and salt. (words)

He came to see and talk to you.(phrases)

When he went out, I was out. (clauses)

নিচে বিভিন্ন conjunctions আলোচনা করা হলোঃ

subordinating conjunctions

subordinating conjunctions কে subordinators ও বলা হয়।

এটি এমন word যা একটি Main clause এবং একটি Subordinate clause কে যুক্ত করে।

এটি সর্বদা Subordinate clause এর সামনে বসে এবং Subordinate clause এর সাথে sentence এর বাকি অংশের সম্পর্ক স্থাপন করে।

আর এভাবেই এটি তার পরবর্তি clause কে Main clause এর অধীন করে। যেমনঃ

As she was busy, she could not come.

He said that he was ok.

Common Subordinating Conjunctions

after-পরে

although-যদিও

as-যেহেতু

as if -যেন

as long as-যতক্ষণ as though-যেন because-কারণ before-আগে

even if-এমনকি যদি

even though- এমনকি যদিও

If-যদি

in order that-

Though- যদিও till- পর্যন্ত

unless-যদি না

until-পর্যন্ত

rather than-বরং | when- যখন

Coordinating conjunctions কে coordinators ও বলা হয়।

এটি এক ধরণের word যা একাধিক words, Main clause বা sentence কে যুক্ত করে। যেমনঃ

for: He is gambling with his health, for he has been smoking far too long.

and: They gamble and they smoke.

nor: They do not gamble nor do they smoke.

but: They gamble, but they don’t smoke.

or: Every day they gamble or they smoke.

yet: They gamble, yet they don’t smoke.

so: He gambled well last night so he smoked a cigar to celebrate.

Correlative conjunctions

‘Correlative’ conjunctions জোড়া শব্দের মতো ব্যবহৃত হয় এবং একই রকম গুরুত্ববিশিষ্ট words and groups of wordsকে যুক্ত করে।

৬টি ভিন্ন’ Correlative’ conjunctions আছে। যথাঃ

Examples:

1. either…or: You either do your work or go out.

2. not only…but (also): Not only is he handsome, but he is also brilliant.

3. neither…nor (or increasingly neither…or) – Neither the basketball team nor the football team is doing well.

4. both…and-: Both the cricket team and the swimming team are doing well.

5. whether…or-:Whether you stay or you go, it’s your decision.

6. just as…so- — : Just as many Australians love cricket, so many Canadians love ice hockey.
